“ART RECYCLED!” July 7 to September 2, 2012 Reception:
July 7
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: APRIL 25, 2012.
This IS NOT an invitation to an art show with an environmental theme!
I would like to invite you to explore what original art is. Do we ever
create an “original”, or are we constantly referencing concepts and
ideas that have come before? What is new then? Techniques? Media? What
can constitute art? If we ever think we have come up with something
“new”, how long does it stay fresh? With the speed of information
technology some would argue nothing is original for very long; ideas get
shared instantly as they are thought of. What is your way of working? Do
you come up with new concepts and convey them by understood means; or
are you the inventor of new ways of making art but working with
traditional concepts?
For example: Take Kate Hansen’s Madonna and Child portraits you might
know from last year’s The Art of Motherhood show. She played with
traditional subject matter “mother and child” but put them in a modern
context by conveying the people as they truly were instead of an
idealized version of baby and mother.
Or consider Damien Hirst’s the Physical Impossibility of death in the
Mind of Someone Living, which was/is a tiger shark in formaldehyde
displayed in the first Young British Artists exhibition in 1992 at the
Saatchi Gallery in North London. Certainly original, but does that make
it any good? Paul Gauguin said: “art is either plagiarism or
revolution”. What do you think? Whether you are interested in playing
with ideas or materials; let us know. Submit your artworks in any medium
and explain in your statement whether you think your work is an original
or that you are just recycling.
The Submission
Your submission MUST contain: Maximum four (4) good images of the
proposed work (title on the image please), list of works, artist
statement, biography and artist CV. We will not “look up” information
from previous exhibitions. The artist statement is essential in the
jurying of the work for this exhibition. It is referred to by the jurors
as they review your artwork. The artist statement should relate this
theme to your work.
IMPORTANT: Please review general GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS
Proposals must be submitted by APRIL 25, 2012. Late entries will not be
accepted. Work must be current (not older than 2 years) and never shown
in this gallery. Artists to be included in this exhibition will be
notified. Exhibition opens July 7, 2012 in the Crowsnest Pass Public Art
Gallery. Questions may be directed to Krisztina either at 403-562-2218
or cnpaaa@shaw.ca.
