In the Books for Babies Program, all
newborns in the Crowsnest Pass are provided with a book bag with
children’s books and ideas for parents about reading with their
children. The CNP Adult Literacy Program, the CNP Literacy Foundation,
the Chinook Regional Library and the Chinook Health Unit work together
in this project. Bags are handed out during baby visits at the Health
Unit.
Can you imagine not being able to read a bedtime story to your child,
read the dosage on a prescription, fill out a job application or make
sense of a map or safety manual? Literacy volunteers help those who
struggle with basic literacy skills, including those who are English
Language Learners.
Become a Literacy Volunteer!!! Help a child or adult learn to read
better! Tutors work weekly with students and receive support and
tutoring resources from the Literacy Programs. Tutor training is
provided at no charge for literacy volunteers.
Literacy encourages people to grow, personally and professionally.
Strong literacy skills help families and communities become stronger.
Giving an hour or two each week to help an adult or child to read can be

Literacy is the Building Block of Learning
Can you imagine not being able to read a bedtime story to your child,
understand a prescription, fill out a job application or make sense of a
map or safety manual?
This is reality for thousands of Albertans. Maybe it’s yours or someone
you know. But it doesn’t have to be. Literacy encourages people to grow,
personally and professionally. The Adult Literacy Program trains
volunteer tutors to help adults in the Crowsnest Pass read, write and
communicate better. Tutors use materials and methods that relate to
their student’s goals, interests and learning styles.
If you or someone you know needs help with reading and writing or if you
would like to become a volunteer tutor, call the Adult Literacy Program
today! Tutors need only commit about two hours per week to be a
volunteer in the Program. For more information, call Program
Coordinator, Cheryl Cann at 403-562-2853. Program Coordinator Cheryl Cann
